Hagan Receives Highest Honor from AIA Memphis

Architecture, Inc. principal awarded Francis Gassner Award

Memphis, Tenn., March 18, 2010 – Joseph Hagan, AIA, principal for Memphis-based Architecture, Incorporated, was recently presented the Francis Gassner Award by the Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for his outstanding contributions to the quality of the built environment in Memphis. The award is the organization's highest.

Hagan was chosen for the award based on his long and rich history of outstanding service to the architecture profession in the Memphis community. For more than 26 years, Hagan has designed, renovated and restored countless buildings in Memphis, helping to preserve the cultural richness of the community and fostering renewal.

In addition, Hagan's passion, commitment and dose of humor in every challenge has aided in his being elected to leadership positions locally and statewide. His service includes recently being elected as chairman of the Tennessee Architects’ Political Action Committee, as well as being appointed to the Tennessee Governor's Task Force on Energy. He also has maintained membership in or served on the board of directors for the Memphis Landmarks Commission, Porter-Leath, Memphis Heritage, The Center for Southern Folklore, Memphis Botanic Garden and Kiwanis of Memphis.

"Joey’s contributions have given life, breadth and depth to the message and vision of the organizations he gifts with his talents," said David Schuermann, AIA, nominator and principal of Architecture, Inc. "He is a fervent advocate of historical preservation, and his passion to renew and revive the community can be seen in every project he touches."

Some of the most recent projects in which Hagan and his firm have been involved include the renovation of East High School, W. C. Handy Performing Arts Park and two multifamily housing developments, University Place and Legends Park.

Hagan will be presented the award at AIA Memphis' Celebration of Architecture Gala on Saturday, March 20, 2010, at 8 p.m. at Opera Memphis.

The Francis Gassner Award was established in 1977 to commemorate the architect Francis P. Gassner, FAIA, who practiced in Memphis from the 1950s until his death in 1977. The award is given annually in order to continue Gassner's legacy of design excellence, service to the profession and leadership to the community. Candidates are proposed annually through a nominations process open to members of AIA Memphis in the following categories: architectural practice, design, education, government, industry, historical preservation, literature, public service, research, science of construction, service to the profession and urban design.
